Update News

The release by Apple provides fixes for several bugs and minor issues which are improved by this new OS fix. The release also updates help with the stability of a user’s Mac.

Bug Fixes Introduced

The bug fixes introduced in this update helps to improve performance. One feature that gets support in this update is the Business Chat feature. The Business Chat feature allows users to chat with business like their banks using the Messages app. It includes support for external GPUs as well.

One of the issues fixed with the newest update includes fixing graphic corruption issues that affect certain apps on iMac Pro. The issue was that certain graphics weren’t loading properly or were, perhaps, not loading at all. Some users were experiencing graphics glitches when attempting to load videos that would get in the way of proper streaming of media. The update to the macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 fixes that issue so users have no issue loading graphics.

Another bug that was fixed with the latest update is something that users like to be able to do with their Mac. It is jumping to the tab to the right using a keyboard shortcut. Users can now simply press Command+9 to move to the tab to the right of the tab they are currently on. This is a quick and easy way for users to move from one tab to the next. All of this without taking their hands off the keyboard or having to use the touchpad.

Enterprise Content

The newest macOS update also includes enterprise content. It will no longer disable User Approved Kernel Extension Loading for devices that are MDM enrolled. If a device has DEP-initiated or User Approved MDM enrollment, admins are able to use the Kernel Extension Policy.

Added Feature

The Apple macOS update also adds another feature. There is a smoke cloud wallpaper that was not previously available on the iMac Pro. This feature is not one that is super important, but it is pretty neat.

Another thing that is added with this update is your Mac will begin to give a warning when the user opens up a 32-bit app. This is in an attempt to phase these 32-bit apps out. Apple plans on phasing out 32-bit Mac apps similar to the way they phased out the 32-bit iOS apps. Apple has said that they wanted the macOS High Sierra to be the last version of macOS that is going to support 32-bit apps. And it seems they are not compromising on this plan.

Accessing the Update

To access the update, you can go to the App store on your Mac. Click Updates located on the App Store toolbar, and use the Update buttons to download any updates available for your device. You can see a list of updates that have been previously installed within the last 30 days as part of your list.

If the update is not showing up for you, return to the Updates tab and check again. You can also search for the specific update you are looking for. One reason you might not see updates for Safari and Mac firmware is because users get it automatically as part of their macOS updates. This is just one less thing you have to worry about with your Mac!

Latest Rumours

Let’s go back to 2017. That was the year that Apple updated the MacBook by putting in faster Kaby Lake chips and improved their integrated graphics. Although the price point was high, the MacBook was a machine to be reckoned with regards to power. With that memory in mind, one can’t help but hope that Apple will sate our desires for a new Mac in 2018.

Possible Release Date

In 2017, Apple introduced the MacBook at WWDC, which was in June. If one had to make an educated guess, it’s possible that Apple is going to release the new MacBook around the same time. Of course, that depends on whether the Intel processor is available and ready to go by that point. Another option is a September 2018 release date which is when the new iPhone will be launched.

There has been a report from Digitimes that the updated MacBook could come out in the latter half of the year this year. The theory of this is that GIS (General Interface Solution) is expecting more LCD display orders to come from Apple. The LCD display orders reportedly include orders for a 13-inch display. One could draw the conclusion that there will be a 13-inch MacBook in the works.

Digitimes also reported that if there is to be a release of a MacBook in 2018, it’s nothing to get too excited about. There is rumoured to be no plan for any major upgrades.

Pricepoint

Apple is fairly consistent with their pricing model. Customers pretty much know what to expect when it comes to the prices of new Apple products unless new models come with fancy upgrades. The price of the MacBook didn’t change in 2017. Its range was from £1,249 to £1,549. In 2018, Mac will probably stick with the same pricing structure unless they discontinue the MacBook Air line. If they were to do this, they might introduce a different entry-level MacBook computer for under £1,000.

Design

As mentioned above, there are not likely to be any major changes to the 2018 MacBook. The MacBook is already super thin and light, weighing in at 0.9kg and 13.1mm in measurement. This is even lighter than the MacBook air by 24 per cent. There is a possibility for a 13-inch model, but there’s nothing certain about that at all. It’s simply a rumour.

There could also be some variety when it comes to colours available for the MacBook. The iPhone 8 added the Rose Gold and Gold options merged together. There could be a possibility of merging together Silver and Space Grey. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Screen

The rumours above mentioned that Apple ordered 13in LCD displays from GIS. They are Apple’s current supplier of modules for the MacBooks currently in production. Another possibility is an OLED display for the MacBook. This is a possibility in the future, but probably not for 2018.

The screen size could possibly change. Right now, the MacBook is only available in the 12-inch size. It’s possible that the rumours of orders for 13-inch screens could mean that there will be a 13-inch MacBook available. This would make sense if the theory above about phasing out the MacBook Air line is correct. Then, Apple would have a 13-inch MacBook Pro and a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and 12-inch and 13-inch MacBook models.

Specs

The 2017 MacBook had a 1.2GHz m3 Kaby Lake processor. This is an upgrade from the 1.1 GHz entry level option. The 2018 MacBook, however, will likely have Cannon Lake or Coffee Lake as processors. These are the successors to Kaby Lake. Also, there is a Kaby Lake R refresh that is a possibility.

There is a chance that Apple will design its own system-on-chips. The A4 was designed in-house and was used in the iPhone 4 back in 2010.

Another option is Motion Co-Processors. Ever since the M7 was introduced in 2013, it has been used to track steps and elevation. Then, the 2013 Apple chip added a secure element to store user’s biometric data and payments.

The first Mac to get one of these chips was the MacBook Pro of 2016. It got the Touch Bar and Touch ID and the Secure Enclave. In 2017, Apple introduced the iMac Pro which had the T2 chip. This chip secures the Core OS with Secure Boot and is a disk controller for the SSDs. It also is used as the image signal processor for the FaceTime camera. It’s very likely, then, that Apple will be designing its own chip for the MacBook 2018 release. It could possibly give power to a Touch Bar or it might be used for Face ID.

Keyboard and Track Pad

Apple was awarded a new patent in February 2018 which might mean that the company will use a second screen as a keyboard for their MacBook in the near future. The title of the patent is “dual display equipment with enhanced visibility and suppressed reflections.” This could possibly mean that the newly patented technology will include a second display for a dynamic keyboard. It might be one that is attached permanently with a hinge, or it might be removable. This second screen would be OLED as well. Apple used OLED for the Touch Bar in MacBook Pro, so it’s possibly an expansion on this technology.

The Takeaway

Apple hasn’t released any information yet about the new release so all we can do is take educated guesses based on past trends and rumors that have been circulated. Apple might release the Mac this year in June, September, or not at all! We will have to just wait patiently and see what Apple has planned for the release of a new MacBook in 2018.

Something that might not seem to be all that important at first is the glass on your phone. The iPhone 8 has a new glass that supports all the iPhone 8 is offering. It’s a collaboration between Apple and Corning which allowed both companies to have the chance to work together and create an extremely durable glass. Apple has included a pretty nifty feature in the iPhone 8: wireless charging. It offers the convenience of not having to worry about having a cord with you all the time when your phone needs to be charged. Those cords just get in the way anyway. Am I right? With the iPhone 8 you can just place your iPhone on the charging pad and voila, your phone will start charging.

The wireless charging might not be as fast as traditional charging (or as efficient), but it offers a major convenience factor. Consider, though, that this is a new technology. Apple wants their products to be the best at everything, so they will likely be improving upon this technology to make it even better.

You’ve got to admit that wireless charging is awesome. And eventually this could lead to short distance charging where your phone might be able to charge so long as it is close to a charger. Imagine your phone charging while it’s in your pocket! There are so many possibilities that this technology could make happen in the near future.

It goes on to explain that this is especially true when the battery is not charged fully. They say that, of course, unexpected shutdowns are not an acceptable problem for iPhones to face. Nor is it acceptable for users to have calls dropped suddenly or for the camera to malfunction at an important moment. At Apple, they want their users to enjoy using their iPhones as always, without fear of any interruption.

“iPhone Battery and Performance”

Apple’s letter also included a link to an article called, “iPhone Battery and Performance.” The power management features are included in iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and future iPhones are expected to have these features as well. The power management feature will begin working on an iPhone when the battery starts to degrade. The problem can be fixed with a new battery. Apple noted that customers began to issue complaints in the fall of 2017 with issues of slower speed. At first, Apple believed that the issue with slower speeds might be due to updates of software or a bug in iOS 11. Now, however, they believe the issue has to do with batteries that are in some of the older iPhones. Because Apple doesn’t want customers to be overly concerned, they plan on making some changes.

Battery Replacements Cost

Previously, the cost for replacement of iPhone batteries for phones that were out of warranty was $79. Now Apple offers cheaper battery replacements. That price has been dropped drastically to just $29. This change is scheduled to go into effect in late January of this year and will last until December of this year. There is supposed to be more information about this price drop in the future. It will apply for all iPhone owners who have the iPhone 6 or later with a need for a battery replacement.

iOS Update

Another plan that Apple is working on is an iOS update. Sometime in the beginning of 2018, Apple plans to put out an iOS update that will give users some new features. So they will be able to see more about the health of their iPhone’s battery. This will allow them to figure out if it is the battery that might be influencing any slow-downs in service of their iPhone. It will allow users to use the process of elimination when determining if the battery is a problem, or if there is some other issue. Of course, not all iPhone 6 phones will have this problem. Apple is also having teams work on ways they can improve the user experience even more. They want to find ways to improve how their phone’s performance is managed in order to avoid the unexpected shutdowns that might happen when batteries start to age.
